Tax the 1% – Giant Human Billboard on San Francisco’s Ocean Beach!

Cab driver Brad Newsham organized hundreds of cohorts into a Giant Human Billboard Saturday, October 29th, on San Francisco’s Ocean Beach. Newsham said: “I work hard every day. It isn’t right that I pay higher taxes than billionaires like Warren Buffet. And actually, Mr. Buffet agrees with me on this.”

The artists of the Occupy Movement are heading to New York’s cultural institutions this evening. The activist artists state: “The game is up: we see through the pyramid schemes of the temples of cultural elitism controlled by the 1%. No longer will we, the artists of the 99%, allow ourselves to be tricked into accepting a corrupt hierarchical system based on false scarcity and propaganda concerning absurd elevation of one individual genius over another human being for the monetary gain of the elitest of elite.” MoMA, the Frick and the New Museum are all expecting demonstrators. “I’ll believe corporations are people when Texas executes one!” Some of the best signs of this movement are hand-painted. And desktop designers and pros alike are busy producing sharp propaganda. This is a networked, global movement, with hundreds of local hubs and new websites launching daily. The Occupy Together site offers free posters for download. Art Crime: Naked Artists Occupy Wall Street in Ocularpation

Ocularpation is a project of New York artist Zefrey Throwell. It started in San Francisco in 2008, and has apparently found a plum context in the ongoing occupation of Wall Street. The image here is from an August iteration of the project, before the current occupation got under way. Throwell says of the neologism and the project: “Ocularpation is a new contraction. Its root comes from occupation, with the dual connotation of both a job done for money, as well as a military or strategic encampment. Ocular, or pertaining to the eye, cements the meaning of the word in a visual context. This is an act of optical guerilla office bivouac.” In short, miming office work in the buff in some of the major financial centers of the world. Of course, some of the naked artists have been arrested. Throwell bails them out. But what about the real criminals…? More Ocularpation here.
