SF Eagle to Re-Open!?

It’s been over a year now, and the City of San Francisco has been without one of its iconic Leather bars, The SF Eagle. This site’s most popular post ever heralded its loss. In a city where real estate is at a premium, the expansive patio had for years provided a big outdoor space where Old Leather and New Gear, club brothers and Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence, Queers of all spots and stripes and even friendly str8 hipsters and visiting moms could all relax, if not quite mix. For the last year, a group of die-hards has occupied other bars for monthly Eagle in Exile events. Now, it seems, the bar is set to re-open…under gay ownership. There has been a lot of weird back-room politics on this one, and there was a moment when it appeared that the place would be delivered to straights. And now?

The New SF Eagle states on their website:

“It will take a couple of months to do the much-needed repairs and upgrades that the property requires, but some upcoming events are already in the works prior to the opening of the bar. Please check this website periodically for new announcements coming soon.

The bar and patio located at 398 12th Street has long been a special place, not only to the LGBT community, but to the entire community for decades, not to mention the live music community as well. We just couldn’t let such a historic place like this disappear!

We will continue to host fundraisers for all the organizations from the past, as well as welcoming new ones to make the S.F. Eagle the pride of our community once again.

We look forward to seeing all of you very soon!”

Well…Cool! Looking forward to the re-opening with (guarded) optimism!

Is “The Beard” a Furry Fancier? SF Giants Pitcher dates Sasquatch!

One of this blog’s most popular posts asked whether San Francisco Giants pitcher Brian Wilson is gay and kinky. Click here. He’s been known to offer “sugar” to the mysterious leather-clad “Machine” and now he seems to be dating Sasquatch. Are they one in the same? The Beard and the Squatch showed up together for the ESPY Awards.  Is the bearded pitcher advocating furry sex for butch guys? Hey, there were furries (or “plushophiles”) at IML this year. That would be International Mr. Leather, not the Illinois Municipal League. I’m not saying having furries at a Leather event is a good thing or a bad thing…but it IS a thing! For Brian Wilson at the Beef Bar, click here.

From the small volume Scouts in Bondage and Other Violations of Literary Propriety. Edited by Michael Bell, a proprietor of secondhand books from the “ancient coastal town” of Lewes, England. Scouts is a collection of amusing covers, this one from 1959 is subtitled “An Adventure Story for Boys.” What? That’s what Neo-colonial crypto-homosexuality was called in the middle of the 20th century…

Hot Draw! Mark I. Chester hosts Gay Men’s Kinky Sketch Group in San Francisco

Hosted by Mark I. Chester, an institution in the San Francisco gay art scene for a long time now. Best known as a photographer, Chester is also an underground artist who opens his SOMA studio to regular life-drawing sessions, including the monthly Hot Draw! – Devoted to fans of kinky gay male erotica. Themes of power, control, submission, fetish, gear, S/m and kink galore dominate at these events. Pictured here is Dan Becker’s quick sketch of artist Richard Bolingbroke’s sub bear paul on all fours. That would be Bolingbroke’s boot: good bear! More on Hot Draw! here. Interested in getting your hot self in front of Chester’s hot camera lens? That can happen, too. Information here.
