Exotic, Fresh, and Fruity: Seen at the Asian Market

Fresh dragonfruit from Vietnam, seen at an Asian market on Clement Street in San Francisco’s Richmond district. I just read up about this fruit, and thought I’d share the highlights. According to Wikipedia, it is also known as “pitaya” and is called “thanh long” in Vietnamese, which means “sweet dragon.” Since I usually only see it in Asian markets, I was surprised to learn that it is the fruit of a cactus native to Mexico and Central America. Or, as the New York Times put it in their 2011 article about the fruit’s increasing popularity, “dragon fruit sprouts like an exotic hood ornament from the arms of a cactus.” The blossoms that precede the fruit are called “moonflowers” or “queen of the night,” because they bloom only after dark.

Black Futurist seen on the Street…

20120314-171014.jpg
…or on the sidewalk, as the case may be. Stencil seen on Market Street in San Francisco. The original Futurists were early 20th century Italian proto-Fascist artists and theorists in love with speed, war, and machines. Black Futurism is a more recent cultural phenom, an Afrocentric hybrid of arts, theory and literature, especially sci fi genres. Gay African American polymath Samuel R. Delany has been an influence in its development as has the visual work of seminal Neo-Pop artist Basquiat. A recent exhibit unpacked the history of this relative neologism.

The Robot and the Lifeguard

Watercolor Robot circa 2010 by Richard Bolingbroke. Paired with a nice Saturday Evening Post cover of nearly a century earlier. The humpy lifeguard is supposed to be guarding those drowning flappers, but he’s got eyes for something – or someone – very different!

California Rock Ant

The California Rock Ant has its origins in the low desert around Palm Springs, but it has been sighted as far north as Mendocino County. Normally a docile species, it can be a bit jumpy around strangers, and is not a suggested pet for those who currently reside in glass houses.

The west coast’s premier private club for men into S/m and Leathersex turns thirty-two years old this weekend. That is older than some of our members. The club is celebrating with a gala dinner on Friday night and a weekend of parties in San Francisco. Thanks to the Italian American Social Club for providing a wonderful venue for the dinner…it really took the Cake!

Originally a brand name, like “Kleenex” – “Skivvies” had a contract to supply the armed forces and became generic military slang for underwear – shorts and tees…
