Happy Birthday, Harvey. You would have been 84 years old. And yesterday was the 35th anniversary of the White Night Riots. The Texan was there and had this to say about that: “I was there. Much has changed. If I were in San Francisco today I would throw Flowers at City Hall!”

Hey, Hippie Birdy, Harvey. Here’s something for you: words, words, words…now glowing pixels maybe making a mark in the brightly-lit on-line world of today. No: no apologies.

What is writing? Staining sheets. While écriture is understood as operating on a symbolic level, the physical act of mark-making is grounded in materiality. Ink on paper, cum on the bedspread and bloody clothing of all sorts share the pull of the gaze…

Roots of Motive Power – Steam-punky sights seen at Kinetic Carnivale

Decorative and informative, this fine ursine railman invited us up into his hot greasy steam engine for a tour. Old #45 on the Skunk Train route. Please note that showing face on Gay Highwaymen doesn’t mean these guys are gay. It means we are. Ok? Thanks, Man!

Old number 15 looking at old number 45. And vice-versa. Mystics and quantum mechanics Noh: the eye with which I view God (or the multiverses) is the same eye with which the Universe (or the gods) view me. Whistle starts the races. All part of the Kinetic Carnivale. Willis, in Mendocino County, California.

Do they call this a glory-hole? They do with glass kilns. This is the vent in the coal-bin on Engine 45. Water and oil to the rear.

Apple Jack handcar and 4-man crew. Handcar races. Best hauler. Not the fastest – but rugged and strong and quick enough to travel and pull what you need!

Happy Bomb Day Very Much!

20130806-172651.jpg

Hey, baby…you’re the Bomb for sure.
Daddy’s nuts soaked it up, transmitting the glowing juice to the next generation. Mutants are here, hear? Hot core fixes the future like a photo. Burning, shining, nausea and finally freaky tadpoles. Hop on Pop, fly-boy! Twitching and different and Noh going back now. Happy Hiroshima Day very much! And Happy Andy Birthday too. Thank you. Thank you. (GH)

They’re starving in Africa. They’re rioting in Spain. There’s hurricanes in Florida, and Texas needs rain.
The whole world is festering with unhappy souls. The French hate the Germans, the Germans hate the Poles.
Italians hate Yugoslavs, South Africans hate the Dutch. And I don’t like anybody very much!

But we can be tranquil and thankful and proud, for man’s been endowed with a mushroom-shaped cloud.
And we know for certain that some lovely day, someone will set the spark off… and we will all be blown away.
They’re rioting in Africa. There’s strife in Iran. What nature doesn’t do to us… will be done by our fellow man.

Ho! Ho! Hold It Right There, Mr. Claus! Occupy Santa tossed in Austin Slammer for coloring with Kids at State Capitol…

United Santa Assault in the USA! Peace. Harmony. Joy. Community. An ancient ritual: Beating the Bounds for Gangdays…and whipping some boys on the way.

Beating the Bounds: an ancient ritual still practiced today in the British Isles. Communities traditionally reinscribed the boundaries of their parishes by walking the edges carrying sticks, pounding on the boundary marking stones. In an era before maps were common, when literacy was rare, these annual events (also called “gangdays”) were intended to impress upon everyone where community boundaries lay. Since resources were allocated according to parish, it was vital that the knowledge was passed down accurately though successive generations. It also helped keep the neighbors in line. To reinforce the lesson, the gangs would (and d0) stop occasionally to literally beat the knowledge into the boys. Sometimes, the youngsters would also be flung against the rocky stiles. All in good fun! Part of a suite of jolly old British customs that includes flogging the peg boys.

Nut Fan gnaws raw Balls at Testicle Festival.

20120314-173608.jpg
Have a ball! It’s the original sack lunch. They are called Testicle Festivals or Ball Balls, and they are popular annual events across the American West. It’s how young bulls become steers. Following the mass castrations of male cattle, local communities come together to feast on their excised gonads: the famed “Rocky Mountain” or “Prairie” oysters. Yum! Here, an avid nutter goes for his favorite dish. Most people cook them. This dude is hard core! Festivals range from the drunk and rowdy to the strangely evangelical and family-oriented. “Have a Ball for Jesus!” is the slogan of one Texas fest. Thanks to Jake Hale for sending us down this road.
