Magnet Sign seen: Bevan Dufty…for Gay Mayor of #SanFrancisco #GOTV

20111107-145620.jpg
Friend of this site Bevan Dufty is running for Mayor of San Francisco. Bevan is not the only good candidate for Mayor, but he is the only gay one, and his election would be historical. He is a life-long public servant who would be an effective and hands-on Mayor. Other popular candidates in our circles include interim Mayor Ed Lee, City Attorney Dennis Herrera and Senator Leland Yee. Best of luck to all the candidates in the race, and here’s hoping not TOO much blood will be shed tomorrow.

Tax the 1% – Giant Human Billboard on San Francisco’s Ocean Beach!

Cab driver Brad Newsham organized hundreds of cohorts into a Giant Human Billboard Saturday, October 29th, on San Francisco’s Ocean Beach. Newsham said: “I work hard every day. It isn’t right that I pay higher taxes than billionaires like Warren Buffet. And actually, Mr. Buffet agrees with me on this.”

Snow in SF?

I woke up to news of snow this morning – my mother in Southern New England sent me a photo of her house buried in 10 inches of October snow. She reports that “We have no heat, no electricity, are melting snow for water to flush the toilets (the cat finds the buckets of snow very interesting), and are using the camp stove to cook. All of the inconvenience of camping with none of the fun. Plus, we had to shovel the driveway and chainsaw the fallen trees off of it.”
In the spirit of Schadenfreude, I was preparing to take a picture of California palm trees and sunshine to send back her way, but I found a more suitable scene to capture on my way to the Civic Center Farmers Market. Yes, it was rapidly melting and surrounded by people in shorts, but I did find snow in San Francisco. (I believe there was some kind of snowboarding event this morning.)
So, in a mixture of solidarity and Schadenfreude, I sent my mom (and now the Gay Highwaymen) this image.

Theft at the Eureka Valley Branch of San Francisco Library: Harvey Milk Plaque stolen!

According to The Bay Area Reporter and other news sources, a plaque of the late gay political icon has been lifted from its home in front of the Eureka Valley branch of the San Francisco Public Library. Photographer Daniel Nicoletta, who came up as a youth working in Harvey’s Castro Camera store and on his campaigns, suspects a motive beyond mere profit. He told the B.A.R. “It definitely stinks of a political message to me. It’s not just some random vandalism by people hanging out in that plaza.”

San Francisco Sunrise

Thursday morning, a Mission sunrise shot from my pre-dawn commute.
As one of my friends remarked when she saw this picture, one of the few perks of starting work early is getting to see the sun rise.

Gruesome Groceries

Rainbow Grocery, my local worker-owned co-op vegetarian grocery store, has a reputation for being a little bit alternative, in every way. It’s the polar opposite of a cookie-cutter Safeway – the heavily tattooed guy with pierced cheeks who helps me find bulk maple syrup, the fact that it HAS bulk maple syrup (and bulk Hawaiian black salt, mesquite flour, and Inca berries, among other things), the lengthy co-op meetings debating whether they should carry Israeli products in light of the Palestinian genocide. I also love the irreverent and also hilarious descriptions of their various products on their handwritten labels. So in light of all this, I guess it’s not too surprising that that Rainbow is celebrating Hallowe’en this year with a candy display featuring lifelike dismembered limbs and body parts. I was quite impressed…and though I’m not sure what this says about San Francisco or our expectations of Rainbow, it’s worth nothing that none of the other shoppers seemed to give the display a second look.
