Rudolf Brazda, Gay Buchenwald Survivor, dies at 98. Protected by Gay SS during the WWII?

“They were never able to destroy me. I am not ashamed.” Buchenwald survivor Rudolf Brazda lived almost a century as a gay man, enjoying the tolerant climate of the Weimar Republic as a young man, and living openly with his lover. When the Nazis came to power, all that changed. Brazda was arrested under the notorious Paragraph 175 of the German Criminal Code and deported to the Buchenwald death camp. The pink triangle that marked him as a homosexual in the camps may have also helped saved his life. “Others died but I came through” Brazda once explained. At least twice he was helped by SS guards, with whom he probably had sexual relationships. He discretely describes the guard who intervened to prevent his execution for insulting another guard as “infatuated.” After liberation, Brazda settled in Alsace, where he met his partner Edi in 1950. The couple stayed together until Edi’s death in 2002. Earlier this year, Brazda was honored by the French Legion d’Honneur. Kim Willsher of the LA Times reports from Paris. Story here.

Enrique Iglesias’ strange on-stage boast: “I have the smallest penis in the world!”

Ouch! Today in public self-humiliation: Spanish singer Enrique Iglesias took a twenty-minute break from a set in Melbourne, Australia during which time he invited four men on stage to compare bare chests and quiz them about their sexual experiences. His declaration that “I have the smallest penis in the world. I’m serious” was the crowning degradation of the weird interlude. The singer later attributed his odd behavior to mixing alcohol and antibiotics. Maybe not such a good idea… Carl Stroud, of the Sun UK, reports on the bizarre incident here.

Cool Photographer Eric Robinson gets Hotter by the Minute…

Eric Robinson. photo: Gay Highwaymen

Friend of this site Eric Robinson has been shooting us, and our friends for a couple of years now. Tintypes! Ambrotypes! Pics on metal and glass…way old school, 19th century-style. PDQ, he will be a “Master.” No, not like That! His MFA (Master of Fine Arts) show opens in August, and he is already showing all over like the worst exhibitionist ever. His ongoing Leathermen series is part of a larger archival project called Other Ways of Being. Robinson says of his work: “What I seek with my camera is the difference – visible difference – that allows us to identify or disassociate with groups, cultures or communities.” These are important cross-cultural concerns, and Robinson’s unique camera view points our brains at them. Leathermen has already shown three times nationally (Chicago, San Francisco and Vermont) and is BIG in Indonesia, where it is featured in the glossy mag, PhotoArt Contemporary. Cool. Keep watching, ’cause this fantastic old-school shutter-bug boy is going to be BIG. Well. If we have anything to do with it anyway…more here. Enjoy!

Huge Victory at the UN: ILGA Gets ECOSOC Status Back!

Congratulations to ILGA, the International lesbian and Gay Association. They were the first LGBT group to gain ECOSOC (UN Economic & Social Council) consultative status from the United Nations in 1993. They lost it in 1994. When I was there in 2006, only one openly LGBT had ECOSOC status. Going there as ILGA members, we had to enter under the auspices of another organization.

Today, a major victory. Check out the details, and a list of which countries supported and opposed the vote here.

Attached photo is taken from ILGA’s website: “Patricia Curzi, UN-ILGA liaison officer, Renato Sabbadini, Co-Secretary general of ILGA and Pedro Paradiso Sottile, Regional Secretary for ILGA-LAC at the United Nations in Geneva.”

Congrats to all who lobbied tirelessly for years to make this happen!

Today in Phallic Architecture: Lincoln’s own Penis of the Prairies!

Penis of the Prairies - State Capital Building, Lincoln Nebraska

The Penis of the Prairies! That’s what locals call the State Capital building in Lincoln, Nebraska. It is easy to see why, and (oh so) very hard to miss! Not the first time political power has been represented by a monumental erection,  nor will it be the last. From paleo to techno, the metaphor holds. More soon.

Is Leather Dead? Leathermens Discussion Group asks some Tough Questions.

Tom...of Finland

That’s the big question. Lots of whispering in the scene. So…is Leather dead? What IS Leather? Is it a kink? A material? A lifestyle? A sexuality?  A philosophy? Yes…and. But the young guys are mostly into “gear.” So…what’s that? Back in the day, tough guys who rode motorcycles wore leather. Some still do. Those of us who were kids fixated of these masculine guys in black leather on bikes in boots. And cowboys in Westerns. And other outlaws. Tom of Finland and The Hun. But kids these days? They grew up with different images, materials and memes. Kevlar. Manga. Boards. Kicks. Thugs. Different kinks, but still kinky, and still into POWER. The more things change…
