Voice of the Youth: Cute Gay Joey Occupies Wall Street

Joey, 19, is from Brooklyn and is an art student at Pratt. He spoke to the We Are the Youth project about his new hobby: “I’ve been going down to Zuccotti Park at least once a week. My friends and I go there and yell so loud and so much that I’ve been losing my voice a lot. I’m trying to get other people active and not feel apathetic toward it. I’ve been beating myself up a little bit for not going more, but midterms happen…” Don’t beat yourself up, Joey! That’s the job of the riot police. More from Joey here.

To protect and to serve: noble ideals. Is this what anyone is hoping for when they apply to the police academy? The police are no more elite than the students. Pawns against pawns: the new kings can afford to watch this like a play. The nearby city of Oakland, including its small businesses, takes the bulk of an assault intended for corporations well insulated from the occupations on the streets. #Occupy Museums! Activist Artists to protest at MoMA, Frick and New…

The artists of the Occupy Movement are heading to New York’s cultural institutions this evening. The activist artists state: “The game is up: we see through the pyramid schemes of the temples of cultural elitism controlled by the 1%. No longer will we, the artists of the 99%, allow ourselves to be tricked into accepting a corrupt hierarchical system based on false scarcity and propaganda concerning absurd elevation of one individual genius over another human being for the monetary gain of the elitest of elite.” MoMA, the Frick and the New Museum are all expecting demonstrators. “I’ll believe corporations are people when Texas executes one!” Some of the best signs of this movement are hand-painted. And desktop designers and pros alike are busy producing sharp propaganda. This is a networked, global movement, with hundreds of local hubs and new websites launching daily. The Occupy Together site offers free posters for download. Designers may also upload their own work for others to use in regional protests.

A Global, Legitimate and very Sexy Threat: BIG Revolutionary Slide Show!

The International Business Times has called the Occupy Movement “global in nature” and a “legitimate threat.” It is that. It is also a feast of photography, and the first world-wide movement supported by the new communication technologies that fueled the Arab Spring. Gil Scott Heron was right. The revolution will not be televised. But…it will be tweeted. The Occupy Wall Street movement is spreading globally and regionally. Small college towns across the United States demonstrate contrasting responses. Protesters in Carbondale, Illinois have been huddling under a model of Buckminster Fuller’s geodesic dome on the campus of Southern Illinois University. Campus police are considering removing the dome. According to Freshman Derrick Burns: “We had about 20 tents set up. Now look – zero, it’s a shame.” Read more and see video here.

Meantime in Arcata, California, home of Humboldt State University, 20 days into a camp-out, there have been some individual arrests, but the protests enjoy wide community support and the City Council is meeting to discuss installation of portable toilets and other amenities at the encampment.
