Some Very Useful Guys: David Blázquez Photographs of Human Furniture
Spanish Photographer David Blazquez has a series of anthropomorphic shelves, tables, and lamps called “Mobiliario Humano” – Human Furniture. Of course the humans are all MAN humans. The series premiered in 2009 at El Fotomata gallery in Seville, Spain.

Rudolf Brazda, Gay Buchenwald Survivor, dies at 98. Protected by Gay SS during the WWII?

Rudolf Brazda is photographed in 2008 in Berlin in front of a memorial for homosexual victims of the Nazis. Brazda died Wednesday, according to a German gay rights group. He was 98. (Ronny Hartmann / Associated Press)
“They were never able to destroy me. I am not ashamed.” Buchenwald survivor Rudolf Brazda lived almost a century as a gay man, enjoying the tolerant climate of the Weimar Republic as a young man, and living openly with his lover. When the Nazis came to power, all that changed. Brazda was arrested under the notorious Paragraph 175 of the German Criminal Code and deported to the Buchenwald death camp. The pink triangle that marked him as a homosexual in the camps may have also helped saved his life. “Others died but I came through” Brazda once explained. At least twice he was helped by SS guards, with whom he probably had sexual relationships. He discretely describes the guard who intervened to prevent his execution for insulting another guard as “infatuated.” After liberation, Brazda settled in Alsace, where he met his partner Edi in 1950. The couple stayed together until Edi’s death in 2002. Earlier this year, Brazda was honored by the French Legion d’Honneur. Kim Willsher of the LA Times reports from Paris. Story here.
Enrique Iglesias’ strange on-stage boast: “I have the smallest penis in the world!”
Ouch! Today in public self-humiliation: Spanish singer Enrique Iglesias took a twenty-minute break from a set in Melbourne, Australia during which time he invited four men on stage to compare bare chests and quiz them about their sexual experiences. His declaration that “I have the smallest penis in the world. I’m serious” was the crowning degradation of the weird interlude. The singer later attributed his odd behavior to mixing alcohol and antibiotics. Maybe not such a good idea… Carl Stroud, of the Sun UK, reports on the bizarre incident here.
Huge Victory at the UN: ILGA Gets ECOSOC Status Back!
Congratulations to ILGA, the International lesbian and Gay Association. They were the first LGBT group to gain ECOSOC (UN Economic & Social Council) consultative status from the United Nations in 1993. They lost it in 1994. When I was there in 2006, only one openly LGBT had ECOSOC status. Going there as ILGA members, we had to enter under the auspices of another organization.
Today, a major victory. Check out the details, and a list of which countries supported and opposed the vote here.
Attached photo is taken from ILGA’s website: “Patricia Curzi, UN-ILGA liaison officer, Renato Sabbadini, Co-Secretary general of ILGA and Pedro Paradiso Sottile, Regional Secretary for ILGA-LAC at the United Nations in Geneva.”
Congrats to all who lobbied tirelessly for years to make this happen!

Ahhh…Sand! Microphotographer sees a Universe of Small, Hard Beauty Underfoot
Sand…those little rocks on the beach. Sand…in the 19th century, it was just one more slang term for testicular fortitude. Because you can never have too many ways to say it! Rocks, gravel, sand, guts, nuts…he’s got some set of balls on him! But back in the day, they used to say: “He’s got sand!”
Gary Greenberg, a biomedical researcher from University College London, has recently published A Grain of Sand, a book of close-up photographs of sand. He sees the big picture in the little picture. He’s not the only one. Way back in the 18th century, proto-homosexual poet William Blake wrote:
To see a world in a grain of sand,
And a heaven in a wild flower,
Hold infinity in the palm of your hand,
And eternity in an hour.
More on Dr. Greenberg’s microphotography here. More on seeing the Universe in unexpected places here.

Who you jivin’ with that Cosmik Debris?
A Pox on All Gurus! This video of a live Frank Zappa show from Sweden in 1973 is not particularly gay, but resonant in a lot of different ways. This Mother (of Invention) stares down The Mystery Man and tells it like it is. Whether it is snake-oil or salvation, spiritual hucksters are as American as…well, nevermind! “Who you jivin’ with that Cosmik Debris? Look here brother, don’t you waste your time on me!” Take home message: think for your blinking self.

Ubij pederima! (Kill the Fags!) Fascists attack Split Croatia Pride Celebration
“It was scary so forgive the camera shaking.” Friend of this site Anna Kirey, who was there and shot the video posted here, reports that 5 people were taken to the hospital with injuries sustained during attacks by fascists and ultra-nationalists during the 1st ever pride celebration in Split, Croatia on June 11, 2011. Attackers chanted “Ubij pederima!” and “Ubij srbina!” – “Kill the Fags!” and “Kill the Serbs!” According to first hand reports, many police stood back, laughing, and the Mayor of Split, wearing Croat fascist black, watched the action from a nearby outdoor cafe.
Kontra reports from Split: “Public gathering ended in violence. Rute of the march was not secured. Attackers were allowed to throw explosive objects, thorches, big rocks, ashtrays and other objects during the whole time of the march and on Riva where programe was supposed to be held. Facists were allowed to hold hands in facist salute and shout «Kill faggots» and «You must die» almost on the entire length of the rute. Before exit from Marmontova street to Riva it was allowed for big number of violent attackers to completely narrow down the passage for the march. They were also throwing explosives and other objects and participants of the march had to go back twice and then finally go through narrow passage. During all of this police officers were telling to participants to go through the passage, although they were constantly hit by explosives, rocks and other objects.”
Lepa Mladjenovic provides political analysis of the situation: “Croatia and Serbia are states after the long wars, and militaristic & fundamentalist religious politics vastly present .. on top of this there is a special role of the football fans in making of soldiers in the Balkan wars, they are now as well ones who are ultra nationalists, the same militarism continues with them precisely, supported with political nationalist parties and church!! thats all to understand.”
More video: From Balkan artist Rakijamala, click here and for uploads from Queer Zagreb, click here. Interested in the situation around the world? Check out ILGA: The International Lesbian and Gay Association. Kind of like the Queer United Nations.

Happy 271st Birthday to the Marquis de Sade!
Thanks to friend of this site Mike Caffee for alerting us to this! Mike, who is the artist who created the famous Febe’s “Leather David” icon, informs us that way back in the day, his Old Guard circles threw elaborate, very kinky parties in commemoration of the birthday of the original polymorphous pervert.
