A Sustainable Queer Planet? 14th Annual National Queer Arts Fest opens in SF

Philip Huang performs June 9 & 10 at Eros

We have made it this far. What next? How can we keep what we have created and protect it for the generations coming up? The theme of this year’s National Queer Arts Festival is A Sustainable Queer Planet. Presented by The Queer Cultural Center, the festival includes 22 venues and runs for a month. An array of performers, poets, writers, visual artists, musicians, comedians and dancers work through diverse notions of sustainability. Organizations, collaborations, friendships, political movements, publications, networks, connectivity, intentional communities, Queer families, and various ecological and economic interventions are all well represented in this month-long festival. High Holy Homo Days are upon us!

Watch this space for notices and commentaries on select individual programs. Philip Huang, pictured above, performs in Formerly Known As: Performances by Male and Trans Sex Workers. This two-day program, hosted by Kirk Read, takes place at The Center for Sex and Culture, and features a different line-up each night. It includes writers, performance artists, comedians and a slideshow of visual work. For a complete listing of festival offerings, visit The Queer Cultural Center’s site here.

Kudos! SF Giants to make an “It Gets Better” Video

According to an SF Weekly article: “the team will make an iconic ‘It Gets Better’ video to encourage LGBT youth across the nation. The Giants will be the first professional sports team to join the spirited campaign aimed at curbing LGBT bullying and teen suicides.” Good for the Giants! Way to set the bar, boys. For more about the ‘It Gets Better’ anti-bullying media campaign, click here. For a bizarre promo for the Giants May 25th “Dynamite: A Fundraiser for Keenan Cahill” click here. Ding Dong! There’s always another Wicked Witch in the Wings…

Remember the movie? The death of the Wicked Witch did nothing to protect Dorothy and her friends from the Flying Monkeys. Something to keep in mind. Meet the new witch; same as the old witch. Here is a fan video of the Klaus Nomi version of Ding Dong (The Witch is Dead). And here is an audio version from Ella Fitzgerald.

Marines get schooled on a post DADT Corps – AP Video

A Marine Corps instructional video on the implementation of the repeal of DADT. Plenty of eye-candy in this one including some nice workouts during the intro. Shot at Camp Pendleton. Thanks to Joe Jervis of Joe. My. God. for this clip. Originally via the Associated Press. Choice instructional bits include: “Nobody’s trying to change your mind. Nobody’s trying to change their minds.” Too serious? For musical Marines, click here. For more armed forces silliness, here.

The Munchkin and the Giants: Keenan Cahill meets The Beard

Big balls on this little man and a bigger beard on his buddy. 16 year old YouTube star Keenan Cahill hams it up Dynamite lip-synch style with the infamous Giants pitcher Brian Wilson and cute fielder Cody Ross. And a furry. Bizarre! Cahill lives bravely with Maroteaux–Lamy syndrome, a condition that severely stunts his growth. Wilson lives bravely with the adulation and derision of millions. For a great clip of him with his leathery pal The Machine, click here. Wilson and Ross will be hosting “Dynamite: A Fundraiser for Keenan Cahill” during the game against the Florida Marlins on May 25. Information here.

Competitive Timbersports! Hot Lumberjacks work the Wood.

These lumberjacks look okay to us! They can come work on our trees anytime. Timbersports is the lumberjack version of rodeo: a competitive event to show off working skills. Surprising that there seems to be no gay competitive timbersports team. After all…Timbersports!? And Lumberjacks are certainly iconic enough. Touko Laaksonen, known as Tom of Finland, certainly thought so…

The Beast in Me…

…is caged by frail and fragile bonds. Nick Lowe’s quiet, intense, acoustic analysis of his own shadow. Not gay per se, but it does speak to Leather aesthetics and spirituality. We should all be so well-acquainted with our own beasts. Another quiet intense man, Johnny Cash “The Man in Black” covered it here.  Careful of the quiet ones. And keep the restraints handy.

Rough Times at the Glory Hole: Shooting a Kink Men Bound in Public Shoot

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

Kink Men Video produces a series called Bound in Public. One bottom bound, tormented and put to sexual use by a large group of men. The bottom and several of the Tops are paid performers. They rest of the group are a vetted gang of guys who are encouraged to roughly penetrate the bottom’s holes, verbally humiliate him and of course, take photographs. Check out the video series and look out for more shots of these shoots here.

Richard Bolingbroke’s Personal Encounter with a Video Storm

San Francisco artist and friend of this site Richard Bolingbroke recently visited a video installation at the exhibit Breathed…Unsaid…Exploring Personal Encounters with Cultural Diaspora at San Francisco’s Somarts Gallery. He took photographs of his shadow playing across the screen to produce these King Lear-like images: a solitary figure in silhouette, seemingly struggling with the burden of power – or maybe just raging against the oncoming storm. For more on Bolingbroke and his more typical methods of art-making, click here and here.
