3rd Eye (I) in the Back of his Head: Wafaa Bilal to transmit live from NYC to Qatar and On-line.

Wafaa Bilal displays his "3rd I" (AP Photo)

Who has the right to record whose image? Where? Under what conditions? Corporate, civic and governmental surveillance are increasingly the norm. Airport security systems strip travelers bare. Businesses record their customers, but often forbid photography on the premises. As our imaging technologies become more sophisticated, ethical questions become more tangled.

Iraqi-born media artist and NYU/Tisch School of the Arts professor Wafaa Bilal is shooting back. He has had a small digital camera surgically implanted into the back of his skull, and for a period of one year, the camera will transmit images in one-minute intervals from the back of the artist’s head to Qatar and On-line. The piece is called The 3rd I, and was commissioned by the Mathaf Arab Museum of Modern Art as one of 23 contemporary works that will inaugurate the new museum that opens in Doha, Qatar on December 30th. What images will come? The On-line launch is the 15th of December, and is counting down now at The 3rd I.

Reasons to not breed: Funny French Language Television Ad for Zazoo Condoms

Another great benefit to being gay. We can fuck our brains out and never have to worry about this particular form of screaming side-effect. Of course, we’ve got our own little buggers to worry about…

Leather or Not? Is SF Giants’ Star Pitcher Brian Wilson Kinky? Is “The Beard” Gay?

Just For Men Wilson. B-Weezy. Flicker. Mental Assassin. The Beard. Whatever you call him, Giants star pitcher Brian Wilson is as much a performance artist as he is an athlete. But what does it mean? The look: tattoos, mohawk, shaved head, thick beard, torn t-shirt, pinky ring, a cock-ring worn as bracelet, always close at hand. The attitude. The friends. Who is The Machine? A neighbor who comes by for “sugar” as he quips to the startled interviewer Chris Rose? His team-mate Pat Burrell playing an elaborate prank as suggested by some internet commentators? And what about the gear? Described as wearing a “gimp outfit” by some in a reference to Pulp Fiction, the man in the leather harness, jockstrap and hood in the background of this video would look right at home in a private dungeon or at the SF Eagle on a Sunday afternoon. But then…so would Wilson. So the question, still open, is: “Is he or isn’t he?” Is he playing a character? Or is he really…one of us?

Chaos in San Francisco’s Mission District as Car plows into rowdy Crowd of Giants’ Fans…Graphic Video.

Wild Giants fans dance around a bonfire at the corner of 22nd and Mission, jamming percussion on tin cans and street signs, pummeling them with skateboards, chanting and dancing, wild and ecstatic. Riot or street celebration? So far, the damage is only to property. But when a car plows into the crowd, things turn ugly. The mob reacts; the police arrive. Night sticks come out. Cameras flash. The new pose of civilian surveillance: hand up; phones out. Snap. Snap. We’ve come a long way, Baby, from Rodney King. A voice from the crowd offers sage advice: “Keep on stepping back, Man. You don’t want to get close to this!” Point well taken.

Maybe God DID make Adam and Steve: Georgia Megachurch (former) Bishop Jim Swilley Comes Out

In the wake of the recent spate of publicity around suicide among queer youth, Georgia evangelical megachurch pastor Jim Swilley has come out publicly. In a sermon to his congregation, he equated two major themes in his life: his call to God and his sexuality. Swilley and his wife of 20 + years recently divorced amicably, and Swilley credits her with urging him to live openly as the gay man they have both always known him to be. The couple have four children and together grew the Rockdale County Church into the huge Church in the Now. Pastor Swilley has stepped down from the College of Bishops of the International Communion of Charismatic Churches – at their request.

Pastor Swilley is to be commended for his decision and action to come out. His life will never be the same. He is no longer a bishop. He may lose his church. Certain good “christian” bloggers are savaging him on-line, throwing up dreck about his being a “tool of Satan.” But most religious people are not like that. The fringe has been representing the center too long. The military is already teeming with gays. So are many churches. Most soldiers don’t care. Most folks sitting in church Sunday morning don’t care. Most already know gay people: a friend, a cousin, a co-worker. Attitudes are changing, and actions such as the pastor’s are key in this shift. We really are everywhere. Even in the mainstream.

Enormous physical and emotional harm is done to queer youth at the hands of cowardly bullies and disinterested school administrators. Enormous harm is also done daily to many of these same kids in the pews of their churches. The effects of spiritual violence can be as devastating as any other trauma. For queer people of faith, seeing young people alienated from the Divine because of the actions of bullies in pulpits is tragic. Out people of faith, including clergy, are powerful antidotes to religious hatred. God loves all His children. As friend of this site Tim’m T. West has been known to say: “If it ain’t Love, it ain’t God.”

“Out and Vote!” Taiwan Gay Pride Parties for Policy Change

Revelers at Taiwan Pride - Photo Reuters

In Taiwan, the Chinese speaking world’s largest Pride Celebration is underway. Like Pride celebrations everywhere, glitter and muscle abound. And like many, this party comes with a deeper message about human rights and dignity. Numbers speak…and with numbers can come political power. This year’s theme is “Out and Vote!” The Taipei Times reports.

Guys at Truck Stops: Surveilling the Wildlife at a Kansas “Kum N Go”

Gas stops provide ample opportunity for observing local wildlife in its own environment. These specimens were recorded in mid-May, 2010 in Kansas at a “Kum-N-Go” on the I-80. For a candid photo of the seldom-seen Middle American Humpy Striped Gas-Guzzler, click here.

No sexy guys in this one. But some street art. And some signage. And strange mise en abyme  headlines. And plants and where they grow in cities. And even a little negative Obama-Rama. For more on that, click here.
