Scruffy Hippie Boys at the Berry Fest

I heart Covelo. Seeing them seeing us seeing them at the annual blackberry festival. In the remote hills of Northern California’s Emerald Triangle. Three decades of music, mischief, munchies…et cetera, et whatever else grows there…

Only YOU can…fill in the blank. Smokey at the Fair!

Folsom, Dore and Pride aren’t the only fairs where you can see bears! Smokey is a traditional VIP at the annual Blackberry Festival in Covelo, California. Here, he greets an admirer and hangs with a bud from the forestry service.

Burgerville!

With all of the amazing local berries we’ve been eating, we set out in search of a blackberry milkshake. A friend tipped us off to Burgerville, a Pacific Norhwest chain of local, sustainable fast food. Sure beats California’s In-N-Out Burger! Pictured here is Natoyiniinastumiik and with a colossal Walla Walla onion ring. I had a wild smoked salmon and local hazelnut salad, and a berry shake – amazing. Only downside: the receipt gave a calorie breakdown of our food, informing us that this one meal represented 90% of our recommended daily caloric intake. Still, I’m excited to hit this place again on the way back down.

Oregon Blackberries

It’s still pretty early in the berry season, but we managed to pick a hatful from the bushes that were bearing early fruit. Fresh-picked Oregon berries are one of the most delicious foods in the world…still warm from the sun, they melt in your mouth (hopefully not your hat). Rogue River Valley, Southern Oregon.

A Fruit Cow?

Seen on the awning of a shop on Mission Street in San Francisco, on my walk home tonight. Strange art for a Saturday night/Sunday morning…
(Also, note the “Like” sticker slapped on – Facebook-inspired graffiti?)
