Anti-Circumcision Activists Protesting in SF

20120108-162246.jpg

Anti-circumcision activists were protesting at Civic Center outside the San Francisco Public Library this afternoon. I couldn’t get a shot of their really provocative sign (depicting a bloody scalpel), but here’s a protester with a sign decrying genital mutilation.

As I understand things, this small but vocal group is trying to put male circumcision, which they view as cruel and inhumane (possibly a human rights abuse) on the ballot, with the hope that San Franciscans will vote to ban it.

While they may be correct about circumcision severing valuable nerve endings and not being necessary for cleanliness, I do not believe that they have a very high likelihood of success. The practice is too integral to major religious traditions practiced in the city, and critics have painted them as religiously intolerant.

Not that they’re asking my advice, but a wiser approach might be to push for education, rather than legislation – and to focus their efforts on people whose religious background does not mandate the practice. They might have a higher success rate if they were to focus on educating individuals and bringing about social change. (Less provocative signs might help them to seem more reasonable and approachable, too.)

Complicated issue…file this under “Only in San Francisco.”

You’d Better Beware!

Not because of x-mas and the Nasty Santas. But all the time. Cause Big Brother IS watching. So is Big Lots. And Bob’s Big Boy and Big Mac and the rest of the big bad corporate people. What? They are people, aren’t they? Must be. Says so in the big legal tomes and on the bigger Internet. Prove they’re not. See? Now…prove you are. Hah!

Rise Up! The REAL 99%…

20111223-121242.jpg
The real 99% isn’t even human. Think there’s an evil elite and everybody else is innocent victim-pie? That’s not even cute on Saturday morning cartoons. We are all complicit. Everything eats and is eaten. Bert sez: Food is the first thing mortals follow on. And that’s where it begins…

Goodbye to Louie’s, Rossi’s, Marcello’s? Rising Rents may threaten Historic Castro District Small Biz Building

Castro Street. photo: Gay Highwaymen

Remarkable what you can learn in a barber’s chair. Louie’s Barbershop at 422 Castro Street has been at that address since 1932. Marcello’s Pizza, its neighbor to the north, has been there since 1978, and Rossi’s Deli has been there since…well, almost forever. Now, these familiar neighborhood haunts may be threatened. Word through the Gay-vine is that the old building has changed hands, and that the reasonable rents that have kept it stable for years are scheduled to skyrocket. Details are fuzzy, but multiple heirs and international investors are said to figure into the situation.

Small business is the heart of urban neighborhoods. Each one that gets forced out and replaced by a McBiz diminishes the soul of the place. As do empty storefronts. The international corporations and holding companies that invest in urban real estate are not invested in the well-being of residents. They buy pieces of neighborhoods for their portfolios and don’t care much about occupancy. Raise the rent by a factor of ten, then write off the vacant building. Its just good business…and there goes the neighborhood.

Sign Seen South of Market. Says a lot; but what? What links sign and sleeper? Did this person write it? See it and decide to sleep just there? Maybe never noticed? And the pigeon passes on.

UC Davis Professor calls out Chancellor: Police Brutality Is Your Fault. Resign Now!

Nathan Brown, Faculty in Critical Theory, UC Davis

In an open letter to University of California Davis Chancellor Linda P.B. Katehi, Assistant Professor Nathan Brown challenged her to take responsibility for the tear-gassing of peaceful, seated protestors.

Brown wrote: “You are responsible for it because this is what happens when UC Chancellors order police onto our campuses to disperse peaceful protesters through the use of force: students get hurt. Faculty get hurt.”

Among the injured were Professor Robert Hass, former Poet Laureate of the United States. For the full text of Dr. Brown’s letter, click here. For a slideshow of the Cal Occupation, here. And for another take on the police pepper-spraying students at Davis, here. Note the sea of camera-phones. The revolution will not be televised, but it may well be webcast.
