California poppies.

This week we celebrated the little-known holiday of California Poppy Day, in honor of our state flower. The poppies shown here are at the Stanford Farm.

The Bottom of the Bay…

The Bottom of the Bay... a Product of Many Forces.

An old joke about our fair City by the Bay goes as follows:

There’s something in the air in San Francisco that keeps women from getting pregnant… men’s legs.

One highly scientific study has shown that the Bottoms of the Bay make up a larger percentage of the Bay Area scene than one might expect. Other research, however, has contested this claim.

Geologists have taken the matter a step further, and sought to answer the timeless question: why is this so?

Their findings are shown on the above data display: There is no simple answer. The Bottom of the Bay is a highly complex creature — a product of many forces.

Colma: A Pilgrimage to the Emperor’s Grave

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

This morning was the annual pilgrimage to the grave of Joshua Norton, Emperor of the United States and Protector of Mexico. (Colma, in case you didn’t know, is where most deceased San Franciscans are buried; the dead outnumber the living in that city.) Led by his “widow” José Sarria (the Dowager Empress), a group of drag queens, Leatherfolk, and friends left Marlena’s Bar in San Francisco around 8:30 am, bound for the Woodlawn Cemetery in Colma. The event began with a procession to the gravesite, followed by speeches and performances, and finally, the Widow Norton laying flowers on the late Emperor’s grave. The crowd included political dignitaries such as San Francisco Treasurer Jose Cisneros, and Castro district Supervisor Scott Wiener, and was MCed by Donna Sachet. Community groups performed, including Cheer SF, the San Francisco Lesbian Gay Freedom Band, and the Lesbian/Gay Chorus of San Francisco. A great celebration of San Francisco queer spirit.

A Quiet Revolution at Oxford with Fluxus Pioneer Yoko Ono

Fluxus Pioneer Yoko Ono talks about god, chaos theory and quantum entanglement – without ever using those words.

An excerpt: “So now I call ourselves the small pebble people. Send small pebbles to the world. Don’t make big splashes with large stones. That will attract people and the wrong people as well. Our quiet revolution will not make announcements, but one day will be accepted by all people as the norm of life. The human race has done that with many things. Like we wanted to fly, and invented aeroplanes. We wanted to see the other side of the moon, and we have. This time, we want to heal our planet, and bring peace to this world. We can do that.”

The full text of her speech, A Quiet Revolution, delivered on March 10th at Oxford University, can be read here.
